At Black Gold, our objective is to improve our environment every day. Land management is fundamental, and the careful applications of water, fertilizers and pesticides are critical components of our agronomy practices. We use a systems-based approach that applies to nearly every decision we make. We embrace the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) concept and base our strategies on the best science available. Integrated Pest management (IPM) has been part of our production effort for generations.
Production
Production agriculture requires the use of expensive resources. Sustainability implies the efficient use of physical inputs as well as the conservation of all forms of energy. We are constantly seeking new methods to improve efficiency and implement conservation practices. The steps we’ve taken include:
- Using "new generation" fuel-efficient power units and the use of renewable bio-fuels when practical.
- Implementing GPS and auto-steer technologies to maximize field efficiencies.
- Annual calibration of irrigation pivot output and the implementation of field-based sensor technology for optimum application timing and water conservation purposes.
- Regular soil and plant nutrient testing schemes to avoid over-application of fertilizers.
Handling
Resources are used not only to grow agricultural products, but also to make them ready for the consumer in the form of washing, grading, packaging and transporting. We are constructing new facilities using LEED construction techniques, investigating renewable and efficient energy sources, and using the latest technology to ensure safe and energy-efficient processing. For example, we have located our facilities in rural settings, allowing us to capture wastewater and reuse it for irrigation on other growing crops.
Transportation
Black Gold operates in diverse geographic areas, allowing us to provide locally grown products to the market. Growing products closer to their markets eliminates “food miles” or the need to haul products for long distances. This is a dramatic example of how we minimize our impact on the environment: in addition to reducing the environmental impact and “carbon footprint” of transportation, products reach the market sooner, naturally extending shelf life and reducing the amount of product waste.
