Sturgis, MI 49091
The community:
The halfway point between Chicago and Detroit, Sturgis is known for its manufacturing industry, which produces a wide array of products including plastics injection molding, auto parts, tool and die, hospital dietary products and metal fabrication. The county government was formed in 1829. Legend has it that around 1830, Governor Cass visited the area, had dinner at the residence of Judge Sturgis and was so impressed with Mrs. Sturgis' biscuits that he suggested the name of Sturgis for the new settlement.
Operations:
The area has an abundance of irrigated, loamy soil ideal for chip potato production. Added in 2000, the farm location sits on the Indiana/Michigan border and added flexibility to Black Gold's Winamac, Indiana, production area. New facilities for efficient all-weather grading were used for the first time in 2002. This area is a major seed corn production area.
Employees:
Black Gold at Sturgis has close to 10 full-time and up to 24 seasonal employees.
