The community:
Nicknamed the "City of Thirteen Highways," Hawkinsville is the county seat of highways leading in from seven adjoining capitals. It is named after Colonel Benjamin Hawkins, a Revolutionary War soldier and U.S. senator. Incorporated in 1830, it is the county seat and has a population of about 3,200. The city is known for boiled peanuts, BBQ, pecans, and harness horse racing. Hawkinsville is home to one of the largest harness training facilities in the country and celebrates the Hawkinsville Harness Horse Festival every spring.
Operations:
Among the crops grown in the area are peanuts, cotton, corn, soybeans, watermelon, wheat, canola, and of course, potatoes. The red, irrigated sands of Pulaski, Dooley and Wilcox Counties are very productive and serve the important late May to July 4th shipment window. In 2008, production facilities were integrated to enhance productivity and accommodate growth opportunities in this region.
Employees:
Black Gold at Hawkinsville has close to 10 full-time and 30 seasonal employees.
